Clips and Headbands {Supply List and Sample Pictures)

We are going to learn the basic skill of making ribbon clips, and we will also learn how to make headbands from elastic.  These clips and headbands work as accessories all on their own, or you can add embellishments to them {scroll down for pictures}.

At our activity we will have a demo for the ribbon clip and the elastic headband, and then we will work on assembling and embellishing them.  If you don't know exactly what you want to do, come learn the basic skills first and then you can buy your supplies and make your own later.

Please bring your own glue gun and scissors. If you don't have either we can share :)

You can buy the following supplies from me (I'm selling them for what I bought them for, or less):
  • Alligator clip: 20 cents
  • Supplies for a basic clip: 50 cents (includes alligator clip, ribbon, and non-slip strip)
  • Elastic headband: 50 cents for one headband (black, brown or white, plus a few random colors)
Also, I have a lot fabric scraps, some leftover pre-made fabric flowers, buttons, and a bit of polyester felt (the cheap stuff) etc., that you are welcome to use for free.  If you have anything you would like to donate, please let us all know by commenting below.

Where to buy your supplies:
  • Felt - I highly recommend buying high-quality wool or wool-blend felt because it holds up extremely well, but it's hard to find, and you have to go pretty far to get it or order it online.  Go Michael's for inexpensive polyester felt (about 25-50 cents for an 8x11 sheet), City Crafter (Chelsea) or Purl Soho (Soho) for wool or wool blend felt. You can also find wool/wool blend felt on Etsy.com
  • Needle & thread - Michaels, or some drug stores or grocery stores (like Gristedes on 103rd and Bway) have a small section for notions
  • Alligator clips - you can buy these for 20 cents from me, or buy them at beauty supply stores or through Etsy/eBay/Amazon
  • Headbands - you can buy enough elastic for a headband from me (available in black, white, and brown and then a bunch of random colors) for 50 cents, or you can buy them at beauty supply stores, drug stores, target, etc for $1-5 a piece
  • Glue gun + glue - Michael's or Amazon.com, some dollar stores might sell them
  • Fabric for rolled roses - bring your own, or we will have scraps on-hand for you to use
  • Pre-made fabric flowers, synthetic flowers, and diamond/button centers for flower centers: Michaels scrapbook section, flowers found by-the-stem at the back of Michael's in the floral department.

Hair Clips: Here are the basic clips that you can make for 50 cents a piece (and an example of some of the random embellishments I have on hand that you can play around with):

Ribbon:  Here are examples of the ribbon that I have for you to use... most of these are reversible and the other side is a solid, but if you are looking for solid colors you will probably want to bring your own:

Flower Clips: These are examples of some of the fabric flowers you can buy in the scrapbook section at Michael's, or in the floral department (the one with the headband).  You can also buy flower "centers" in the scrapbook section:

Headbands:  You can buy stretchy elastic from me for 50 cents. These are incredibly easy to make.  I have brown, white, and black on-hand (with a few other random colors that are first come, first served), and you can make them any size. These are perfect for infants, babies, and toddlers, and the same size headband fit my 3 year old daughter and my 8 month-old (don't tell my husband that I tried it on my son!):

Fabric Flowers:  these fabric flowers are really easy to make (they are just 90 degree folds), but they take a bit of time and a tiny bit of tacking.  The large flower (about 1.5 inches or so) requires about a 2x20 inch strip, the smaller flower (1 inch or less) requires about 1.5x12 inches or so. You can adjust the size according to how big or small you want the flower. We will have fabric on-hand for you to try, but please bring your own needle and thread if you have them :)

Felt flowers and bows: as mentioned, wool or wool blend felt will hold up better over time, but it's great to learn on the polyester stuff.  Three different types of felt were used for the creations below. The white bow is made of polyester felt, the yellow/beige flower, the orange flower, and the pink bow are made of 100% wool (and I think they will last forever), and the one with multiple flowers is made of a wool blend.
